Colburn School

An internationally renowned performing arts school located in the cultural corridor of downtown Los Angeles, the Colburn School provides the highest quality music and dance education to students at all levels of development, from those about to embark on professional careers to students just starting their artistic journey. Colburn presents more than 350 music and dance events each season featuring the School’s celebrated faculty, renowned guest artists, alumni, and students.

Colburn Orchestra with Esa-Pekka Salonen

Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Colburn School’s Director of Conducting leads the Colburn Orchestra in an electrifying performance of Elizabeth Ogonek’s Moondog, composed in 2022.

The Colburn School’s Director of Conducting rejoins the Colburn Orchestra in an electrifying performance of Shostakovich’s first Cello Concerto, Brahms’ Fourth Symphony and a performance of American composer Elizabeth Ogonek’s Moondog, composed in 2022. Ogonek describes her piece as ‘…a vocalese [a melody without words] for the orchestra. I wanted to evoke this sense of nighttime and dreaminess.”

Colburn Chamber Music Society with Flutist Jennifer Grim

Jennifer Grim, Principal Flute of the Mozart Orchestra of New York and member of the award-winning Zéphyros Winds, performs alongside students from the Colburn Conservatory in a program of contemporary works including Lei Liang’s Lakescape VIII for Flute and Vibraphone and Allison Loggins-Hull’s Hide and Seek for Piccolo, Three Flutes and Two Alto Flutes.

Principal Flute of the Mozart Orchestra of New York and member of the award-winning Zéphyros Winds, Jennifer Grim leads students of the Colburn School Conservatory in a program of works written primary in the last decade. California based composer Lei Liang was the winner of the 2011 Rome Prize a finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Music and winner of the 2021 Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition. Allison Loggins-Hull described by the Washington Post as a “powerhouse,” occupies the rare space of master instrumentalist and composer and this will be demonstrated in her 2020 flute sextet, ‘Hide and Seek’

The Colburn Contemporary Ensemble takes the stage in masterworks of the 20th and 21st century.

Kris Bowers, Pianist and Composer

Emmy Award-winner Kris Bowers has scored some of the most popular films and television series this decade, including the Netflix hit Bridgerton and the Academy Award-winning films King Richard and Green Book. He presents a program of his own compositions including chamber arrangements of his famous scores.

Emmy Award-winner Kris Bowers got his start at Colburn studying jazz, piano, and composition in the Community School of Performing Arts. Since then he has skyrocketed to fame as a composer and pianist who creates genre-defying music that pays homage to his jazz roots with inflections of alternative and R&B influences. Kris has scored some of the most popular films and television series this decade, including the Netflix hit Bridgerton and the Academy Award-winning films King Richard and Green Book. He takes the stage with Conservatory students, alumni, and faculty on Colburn’s Amplify Series for a program of his own compositions including chamber arrangements of his famous film scores.
